Fish Molee / Moilee
Fish Molee is a famous Kerala fish recipe. The word "Molee" literally means "Stew". Fried fish, coconut milk and fresh green chilies are main ingredients in this recipe. It is a mild fish stew suitable for those people who like mild food.
Ingredients:
- 150 grams rohu fish (cut into medium sized pieces)
- 1 large onion (peeled and chopped)
- 2-3 green chilies (slitted)
- 2 tsp. ginger (grated)
- 200 ml coconut milk
- 1 tsp. coconut (grated)
- 1/2 tsp. cumin powder
- 1/4 + 1/4 turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp. sugar
- 3 tbsp. mustard oil
- 1/2 tsp. all purpose flour (maida)
- 2 bay leaves
- Whole garam masala (2 cardamoms, 2 cloves, 1/2" cinnamon stick)
- 1/4 tsp. garam masala powder
- 1 tsp. ghee (clarified butter)
- salt to taste
Making Procedure:
Wash the fishes well. Then marinade the fishes with a little bit of salt & 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder and keep aside for 5-10 minutes.
Heat oil in a kadai until smoke. Reduce the heat and slowly drop the fish pieces into oil. Fry them both sides till they turn golden brown in color. Then remove from the oil and keep aside.
Now add chopped onion into the same oil and fry until it turns in light golden in color.
After that add green chilies, grated ginger, whole garam masala, bay leaves and fry for a minute. Add all purpose flour into it and fry for another 1 minute.
Now add coconut milk, turmeric powder, salt, sugar and bring it to boil. When starts boiling add fried fishes and a pinch of garam masala powder into it. Stir and put the lid on the kadai.
Cook it for 5-7 minutes on low heat or the gravy become thick and creamy.
Then open the lid; add cumin powder, garam masala powder, and ghee in it.
Stir slowly and turn off the heat.
Pour Fish Molee / Moilee in a serving bowl and garnish with grated coconut.
Serve warm with plain rice.
